What is Liposuction?

Liposuction, also referred to as a lipoplasty, is a cosmetic surgery procedure that removes fat from different areas of a patient’s body. This fat is removed or “sucked” out using a stainless steel tube called a cannula which is inserted through a small incision in the skin. The most commonly affected areas are the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, neck, and arms. This procedure has the ability to create the ‘hour glass’ contour every woman desires.

How is a good candidate for this Procedure?

  1. Healthy individuals who are approximately30% from their ideal goal weight and have a good amount of elasticity in their skin along with a good muscle tone are ideal candidates for this procedure.
  2. Both men and women are able to have this procedure done as it is used to remove fat pockets that are hard to get rid of merely with exercise and dieting.
  3. Patients should also not smoke, or stop smoking approximately two weeks before the surgery as this can create complications and heighten the ercentage of risks involved with the procedure.
  4. Ideal patients for this procedure should also keep a positive outlook on exercise and dieting. It is very important to maintain a stable and steady weight before considering this procedure.
  5. If you are planning on dropping a significant amount of weight though, or becoming pregnant, liposuction might not be a good idea since the skin can lose a lot of its elasticity and create saggy skin over the abdomen.

The Procedure for Liposuction surgery

  1. An antibiotic will be given about an hour beforehand, or afterwards
  2. The targeted areas are marked on the body while the candidate is in a standing position
  3. Sometimes photos will be taken of the area to be treated, so the patient will have before and after photos
  4. In the operating room, a sterilizing solution, such as Betadine, is applied to the relevant areas
  5. Local anesthetic is injected and the patient may be given a sedative, either Aakarlly or through an IV injection
  6. Incisions are small, about a quarter to a third of an inch
  7. The patient will probably have an IV fluid line, since he or she will be losing fluid with the fat and the fluid balance must be kept intact
  8. There will be some monitoring devices attached to the body to keep track of the blood pressure, heart rate, and blood oxygen level
  9. The patient will feel only a scraping or rasping sensation from the cannula movement
  10. Usually the patient can get up, walk around, and go home the same day if he or she did not receive general anesthesia, although they would need someone else to drive them

You can expect to see fantastic results within six weeks of Liposuction. The treated areas will look toned and supple and your whole body will glow with new-found luster. The treated areas will retain their sculptured appearance as long as you maintain the same weight. If you gain weight, normally it will appear in areas other than those that were treated.
